The Wisconsin Union Theater team presents a performance featuring Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, who will pay tribute to his mentor Wayne Shorter in a special collaborative project, called ABSENCE, with The E-Collective and Turtle Island Quartet on Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union.

Critically acclaimed chamber orchestra Sphinx Virtuosi will perform on Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union as part of the Wisconsin Union Theater’s 2021-22 Concert Series.
In addition to marking the beginning of the Concert Series season, Sphinx Virtuosi will be the first classical music concert with an in-person audience held in Shannon Hall since March 2020.
The Wisconsin Union Theater will receive a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, which provides emergency assistance for venues affected by COVID-19, in the amount $686,413.58 from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
COVID-19 began impacting the Wisconsin Union Theater’s operations in March 2020. That month, with news of COVID-19’s increasing presence in the United States, the Theater team followed the University’s mandated closure of all in-person gatherings and moved to planning online events until it could safely resume in-person programming.
Wisconsin Union Theater team releases full 2021-22 season lineup
The Wisconsin Union Theater team’s 2021-22 season will include jazz, classical music, R&B music, the return of the Black Arts Matter Festival, and more and will begin in September with in-person performances and some virtual attendance options.
David Elsmo will lead Outdoor UW as its new director, which includes serving as the primary Hoofer advisor, supervising the current recreational advising staff, and overseeing the lakefront rental operation.
Elsmo has been part of the Outdoor UW team for 10 years, including most recently serving as the sailing program manager and Hoofer club advisor. Elsmo will also bring experiential education knowledge and skills to the Outdoor UW director role.
Free film showings, music performances and art activities as well as a new, limited time dining experience will provide Terrace-goers with experiences for a lifetime at the Memorial Union Terrace.
The Outdoor UW docks are back in Lake Mendota, the outdoor recreation equipment is cleaned and ready, and adventures on water and land await with Outdoor UW.
On Sept. 30, the curtains in Shannon Hall will open to a live audience in the Hall’s seats.
This date will mark the beginning of the Wisconsin Union Theater’s 2021-22 Concert Series, which includes six in-person events. The Theater team anticipates that some performances will include online viewing options.
Beginning May 10, all, including Wisconsin Union members, community members, and visitors, can visit the Wisconsin Union’s Memorial Union Terrace, Memorial Union and Union South.
The return of the yellow, green and orange sunburst Terrace chairs that came back to the Terrace on April 14 marked the annual start of months of experiences at the Terrace, called Terrace season.
