The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, has been a cornerstone of the jazz world for nearly four decades. Known for uncompromising interpretations of both original compositions and jazz classics, the quartet has garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including six Grammy nominations and one Grammy win. Its dynamic performances and innovative approach have solidified its reputation as one of the premier jazz ensembles of our time. On May 1, the quartet will grace the stage at Shannon Hall in Madison, offering audiences a chance to experience the ensemble’s exceptional artistry firsthand. Branford Marsalis: Saxophonist and Bandleader
Branford Marsalis, an NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award winner, is celebrated for his versatility and unwavering creative integrity. He has performed with music legends, including Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie. Equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and exploring the depths of jazz, Marsalis's musical universe centers on the quartet he formed in 1986. His leadership has been pivotal in guiding the ensemble's evolution and maintaining its status as a leading force in jazz. While he is known as a saxophonist, his first instrument was actually the clarinet. You may also be familiar with some of his siblings who are esteemed musicians, including Wynton Marsalis who performed in Madison on January 29.
Justin Faulkner: Drummer
The newest member of the quartet, Philadelphia native Justin Faulkner joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet on his 18th birthday in 2009. Since then, he has toured extensively with the group, bringing his cultivated sound to audiences worldwide. Faulkner's early training included studying classical percussion and jazz drums, leading to performances with luminaries such as Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, Orrin Evans and Terence Blanchard. His dynamic drumming style adds a compelling energy to the quartet's performances.
Joey Calderazzo: Pianist
Joey Calderazzo, recognized as one of the finest pianists of his generation, has been a vital member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet since the late 1990s. With an esteemed career that includes collaborations with legends like Michael Brecker and Jack DeJohnette, Calderazzo brings a rich harmonic palette and lyrical sensibility to the ensemble. His evolution as a musician reflects a deep exploration of jazz piano's history, resulting in a distinctive and expressive style.
Eric Revis: Bassist
Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis has anchored the quartet's rhythm section since 1997. Known for his thick, percussive sound, Revis has performed with numerous notable artists, including Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, and Peter Brötzmann. His contributions as both a performer and composer have been instrumental in shaping the quartet's innovative soundscapes. He is credited with composing “Dance of the Evil Toys” and “Nilaste” on the 2019 album “The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul,” via OKeh Records
