Celebrated musical ensemble Doric String Quartet will perform March 22 in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union

Posted: 03/10/26

The Doric String Quartet, which is widely recognized for its refined, period-inspired interpretations of the classical repertoire, will perform in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Wisconsin Union Theater (WUT) Classical Series

The ensemble will perform a program featuring “Four fugues” from “The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080” by Johann Sebastian Bach, String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20, No. 5 by Joseph Haydn, and String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The Doric String Quartet uses custom bows that reflect the style of the time the music was written.

Founded in 1998, the Doric String Quartet has a repertoire of more than 20 recordings, including performances with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, which BBC Music Magazine named the Recording of the Month in 2018.

The current members include First Violinist Maia Cabeza, Second Violinist Ying Xue, violist Emma Wernig and cellist John Myerscough.

“The Doric String Quartet approaches its classical repertoire with precision and attention to historical detail,” said Shauna Breneman, Wisconsin Union public relations and communications officer. “The performance will engage the intellect and stir the heartstrings.”

Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Memorial Union Box Office or by phone at (608) 265-2787.

This performance is co-presented by WUT and the Wisconsin Union Directorate Performing Arts Committee. Other WUT events this season include the Attacca Quartet with Caroline Shaw on April 16 and the Chucho Valdés and Paquito D’Rivera Reunion Sextet on April 30.
