Contemporary African music artist Dobet Gnahoré will perform in Memorial Union’s Shannon Hall on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Wisconsin Union Theater (WUT) season.
Gnahoré is a vocalist, dancer, songwriter and percussionist from Côte d'Ivoire. Her latest album, “ZouZou,” produced by Momo Wang, also known as Dr. Wang, is a tribute to the children of Africa and is intended as a message of hope for the future.
Gnahoré began training in music, dance and theater at a young age. She then moved to France in 1999, where she expanded her music career. Her music is a blend of traditional African rhythms and modern techniques. She often sings in multiple languages, such as Bété, Lingala, Malinké and French.
In 2010, Gnahoré won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the song “Pearls,” a collaboration with India.Arie, making her one of the first Ivorian artists to receive this award.
