Inside the WUDwork with Sydney Weiser

Meet Sydney Weiser, Our WUD Cuisine Committee Director!

Year in school: SeniorSydney
Majors: Community and Environmental Sociology

How long have you been a member of WUD/Hoofers?

"This is my 2nd year!"

Why did you join WUD/Hoofers?

"I saw the director application for Cuisine, which was going to be just starting out in the 2016-2017 school year. I applied but didn't get the role, which happened to be better for me because I learned so much and developed such a great friendship with Federica, last year's director. I wanted to be involved in an organization that had a social lens for food in all of what it did, and didn't separate the myriad of ways people connect to food to its programming. Last year Cuisine was just starting, but I knew that Federica was committed to forming the Cuisine Committee with that in mind, and I wanted to be a part of that too."

What do you do in your role with WUD/Hoofers?

"I direct a team of 4 Assistant Directors and make sure that our programming is within the mission of the Cuisine Committee.  In a nut shell, that mission is to deliver fun and engaging student programming that touches upon the environmental, social, political, and economic factors of cuisine and the food system."

What is one of your favorite experiences from your time at WUD/Hoofers?

"We had an event where someone said that the food tasted like home for them and it made me very happy that Cuisine could bring that comfort to someone. I think that is one of my favorite experiences because it represents how the connection we have with food is so embedded in place and personal experience, and how cuisine can be so much more than something we eat to survive."

Why is WUD/Hoofers special to you?

"I'm not perfect and I don't know it all, but I am passionate about conversations about cuisine and food systems and it is nice to have a place to direct all of that energy. In the same vein, this is also a role in which I can learn and expand my thinking through the programming, and that is a unique experience."

If there was one thing you could make sure everyone knew about WUD/Hoofers, what would it be?

"To take advantage of the learning that can come through these programs!"
