Inside the WUDwork with Marilyn Feldner

Meet Marilyn Feldner, Our WUD Performing Arts Committee Director!

Year in school: SeniorMarilyn Feldner
Major: Statistics with Certificate in Business

How long have you been a member of WUD/Hoofers?

"This is my third year in WUD!"

Why did you join WUD/Hoofers?

"I joined WUD after talking with the Performing Arts Director at the time, Katy Lang, at the Sunburst Festival at Union South. She told me all about what PAC does, including the opportunities students have to choose and work with world-renowned artists on a professional level. That was an area of Performing Arts I had always wanted to explore, and so I started going to PAC meetings and stuck with it for the rest of my college career! (During our first meeting, we got to meet Carly Aquilino [from Girl Code] and Jenny Zigrino, so I instantly knew it was the real deal!)"

What do you do in your role with WUD/Hoofers?

"As the Performing Arts Committee Director, I oversee a team of five Associate Directors who select the season programming for the Wisconsin Union Theater, which encompasses Memorial Union’s Shannon Hall and the Play Circle, and manage collaborations with other student organizations. The PAC Associate Directors and I also manage all of this season’s shows, planned by last year’s committee!"

What is one of your favorite experiences from your time at WUD/Hoofers?

"One of my favorite personal experiences on the Performing Arts Committee was working the Pilobolus show in February, 2017. Pilobolus is a shadow dance company that has performed worldwide, and my role in WUD gave me the opportunity to watch the show backstage. There, I was able to see the front of the screen where the shadows were displayed to the audience, but also behind the screen where the shapes were being made. It was absolutely mind-blowing! From a programming standpoint, I loved working with Bassem Youssef last semester. Not only was the show a great collaboration with the Distinguished Lecture Series Committee, but hearing Bassem’s story, asking him questions, and seeing him engage and challenge the audience with his thoughts on democracy and the role of performers in the social and political climate was simply incredible."

Why is WUD/Hoofers special to you?

"WUD as a whole is special to me because students are given tangible opportunities to explore the things they are passionate about at a level that has the potential to impact the whole campus community. The people I’ve gotten to know through WUD are the people who will change the world with their passions, and WUD enables us to do that."

If there was one thing you could make sure everyone knew about WUD/Hoofers, what would it be?

"If there is a WUD/Hoofer club that you are even a little bit interested in, try going to a meeting or one of the committee’s events and see just how much opportunity there is for students to own their experiences! Also there is free food all the time so if that’s your thing..."
