Meet Farhat Bhuiyan, Our WUD Global Connections Committee Director!
Year in school: Junior
Majors: International Business and Management + Human Resources
How long have you been a member of WUD/Hoofers?
"Since the beginning of sophomore year."
Why did you join WUD/Hoofers?
"My sister [Iffat Bhuiyan, President of the Wisconsin Union] recommended WUD to me because she knew I was trying to get more involved and I applied for an AD [Associate Director] position without really understanding what WUD was all about. My freshman year wasn't that great and I was trying to meet new people."
What do you do in your role with WUD/Hoofers?
"As the [former] Associate Director of Outreach for WUD Global Connections, I planned event series like Free Art Friday and Flavors of the World. I also was in charge of the Cultural Event Collaboration Grant that WUD GloCo offers to RSOs. I also took initiative with our Interfaith Series and Runways of the World Fashion Show. I'm happy to be a part of WUD as a director this year because I get the opportunity to see how everything works on a larger scale."
What is one of your favorite experiences from your time at WUD/Hoofers?
"My favorite experience would definitely be from one of the Flavors of the World that I planned called: Identities in Transition. For this event, we contacted students and staff to talk about their experiences or their families' experiences as refugees. Due to the sensitivity of the topic, we were purposely vague with the speakers because we wanted them to share what they were comfortable with. The event was amazing because each of the five speakers had a different interpretation of our request. One speaker performed spoken word. Her piece is actually on the Union website under Global Connections titled American History-Born. It was really incredible hearing from these first-hand and second-hand voices about an issue most people never have to think about."
Why is WUD/Hoofers special to you?
"I love the people involved with WUD. I have made so many friends and memories. I know that if I am in a WUD space or at a WUD event I will have fun and learn about things that matter to me."
If there was one thing you could make sure everyone knew about WUD/Hoofers, what would it be?
"If there was one thing I could make sure everyone knew about WUD, it would be that WUD has the power to change lives whether in interests, opportunities, or friendships."
