Meet Courtney Medick, Our Vice President of External Relations!
Year in school: Senior
How long have you been a member of WUD/Hoofers?
"This is my fourth year as a member of WUD."
Why did you join WUD/Hoofers?
"I joined WUD my freshman year through the Film Committee. I was looking for a fun organization to join to balance out my academics and extracurricular involvement with the business school clubs I had joined for professional development. I really love movies and when I found out there was a group on campus for movie lovers, I couldn't resist checking it out. But I got so much more than I bargained for. Not only did I find a place to share my interests, I also found an incredible group of people and an amazing organization to belong to. I was hooked from the first moment and as I learned even more about WUD, I couldn't imagine a better organization to be a part of."
What do you do in your role with WUD/Hoofers?
"My role as the Vice President of External Relations is essentially to oversee our organization's marketing, communication, and outreach efforts. I create and execute our campaigns and assist our committees and clubs with their marketing plans. I also help with the overall leadership of our organization and participate on our shared governance board, Union Council. Additionally, I assist the Union with some of their marketing efforts for various programs and initiatives."
What is one of your favorite experiences from your time at WUD/Hoofers?
"One of my favorite experiences from my time in WUD was creating and sharing my first marketing materials as the Marketing AD for the Film Committee last year. I had put a lot of thought and work into my ideas for the campaign and took advantage of the opportunity to apply what I'd learned in my marketing courses. It was exciting and a little nerve-wracking at the same time to realize that I'd designed a campaign and sent it out into the universe for anyone to see. But it was so satisfying to see my efforts out in the world because my hard work had the chance to impact others and it allowed me to have real life hands-on marketing experience which has been invaluable."
Why is WUD/Hoofers special to you?
"I will always value WUD because it provides so many opportunities to have experiences that can't be had anywhere else. I've met so many wonderful people I'd likely never have met and I've been exposed to new ideas and perspectives I'd likely have missed out on. Not only does WUD serve campus with over 2,000 exceptional events and programs a year, it also allows student to apply their learning and skills outside of the classroom. It's been so rewarding to take what I've learned thus far in my life and take it to the next level by actively using it on a daily basis at the Union. I've been able to grow as a person and a professional with the work I've done in WUD and I wouldn't have been able to get that type of hands-on learning to this extent somewhere else. The ownership and creative freedom given to students at the Union is priceless. I have handled high level marketing responsibilities, built leadership teams, managed finances, and made decisions with significant impact among many other things in my time with WUD. To know that at this point in my college career I've experienced so many things that most people never do in college or even in internship positions is mind-blowing."
If there was one thing you could make sure everyone knew about WUD/Hoofers, what would it be?
"WUD is an entirely student-led organization that is open to all students and very few college unions out there can say the same. It's an incredibly unique organization that is incomparable to just about any organization on this campus and even across colleges in the nation. Our students are the ones who are coming up with our programs and then organizing and executing them with the teams they lead. So when you see speakers and performers at the Union, it's our student leaders who contacted them. When you see films and art showcases, it's our students who curated them. When you see discussions and publications, it's our students who designed them. When you see service learning trips and outdoor adventure opportunities, it's our students who orchestrated them. It’s our students who are there every step of the way from the creation of the idea all the way to the end of the program. And I wish more of campus realized these amazing leadership and involvement opportunities through WUD that exist for students to make an impact at UW-Madison."
