Major: Mechanical Engineering

Why you are excited about being a leader: I really enjoyed leading Basecamp last year; I am still very close with my basecampers, and I'm excited to build more of those peer/mentor relationships!

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: You don't have to know what you're doing yet. As long as you take time to explore and have unique experiences, you'll end up in the right place! And don't worry if there are struggles along the way! Everyone is in the same boat (canoe), whether they admit it or not!

Favorite thing about the outdoors: The simplicity of it. It gets me away from my busy normal life and puts all my everyday worries and challenges in perspective.

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for: Canoeing! I didn't get to do a canoeing trip last year so I want to make that happen!

Something unique or weird about you: I have a partially webbed toe. No, it doesn't help me swim. I also like to sing on canoeing trips.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I'm very involved in the Hoofer Outing Club, I work at Outdoor UW, and I play a lot of intramural sports!

Why you are excited about being a leader: I am super excited to be a leader again this summer! This will be my third summer and a Basecamp leader, and I have couldn't imagine my summers without it. Basecamp is such an awesome experience and a fun way to meet cool new people in the beautiful outdoors!

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: UW Madison can seem big and scary at first, but it's really not! You will meet so many people to make it feel like home. Also, the terrace is arguably the best place on campus on a nice day. :)

Favorite thing about the outdoors: I love the bonding that happens between everyone in the outdoors! Being disconnected from technology and the outside world creates some amazing memories and friends.

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for: I love them all, but the backpacking trip always has a special place in my heart. That was the trip I did as an incoming freshman, and I had such a great experience!

Something unique or weird about you: I love to run, which a lot of people tell me is weird. I can also wiggle my ears and play the trumpet semi-decently.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I am in Hoofers Outing Club, Sailing Club, and on the Nordic Ski Team in SnS. I also work in the Outdoor UW Office, so you might see me around if you come paddle-board!

Why you are excited about being a leader: This is my second year leading basecamp trips and I was also a basecamp participant. I am excited to be a leader again because I get to show participants why they chose the best school while having an amazing wilderness experience!

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: Madison is a huge school and there is always something to do for every different type of person. Also, football game days are the most fun days of the year.

Favorite thing about the outdoors: Hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter! I just generally love to take a break from everyday life and appreciate the beauty around me!

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for: Backpacking!

Something unique or weird about you: This past semester I studied abroad in Rome.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I am on the exec board for the Ski and Snowboard club and I am a Badger Volunteer leader. I also play intramural basketball, dodgeball and flag football.

Major: Kinesiology

Why you are excited about being a leader: I have the chance to learn more wilderness skills and get some freshman excited about coming to Madison (plus I get to work with some great people)

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: Yes it’s big and it might be hard sometimes; but if you find what you love to do and do it, you will find your place and your people.

Favorite thing about the outdoors: Being outside in the sun, especially after a WI winter!

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for: I am interested about the new Madison one but most excited for canoeing and the new backpack route!

Something unique or weird about you: If I could, I would drop out of school and start a coffee shop somewhere in the mountains. I also recently learned how to whistle, but I can’t change pitch.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I work at Outdoor UW and I just joined Hoofer sailing club (I am hoping to learn this summer a bit), I am also a part of Salt Company, and I volunteer with Adapted Fitness and at the hospital.

Major: Biology

Why you are excited about being a leader:

I am excited to share my passion for nature and the outdoors with a captive audience.

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: Madison’s campus is great - but definitely make time to get away and enjoy the awesome lakes, bike paths, and parks that make up the greater Madison area.

Favorite thing about the outdoors: I love the constant intrigue, never knowing what will be around the next corner or under the next rock.

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for: Canoeing is near and dear to my heart - but I’m really down for anything.

Something unique or weird about you:  Two of my preferred pastimes are getting lost on runs and catching frogs.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I am a member of the Greenhouse Learning Community, the Student Sierra Coalition, and the Hoofers Mountaineering and Outing clubs. I also work in a wildlife toxicology lab.

Allie Levin, Junior

Allie Levin, Junior

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Why you are excited about being a leader: I went on the Basecamp backpacking trip as an incoming freshman and want to extend that experience to others. I can't wait to spend time in the great outdoors while solving challenging riddles and forming new friendships!

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: Madison is huge and full of hidden gems! If like the outdoors, I'd recommend spending some time in the Arboretum. It's the best place to run, walk, bike, and cross country ski in Madison (especially in the fall)!

Favorite thing about the outdoors: It's refreshing to realize simple tasks like going to the bathroom or preparing a meal can require quite a lot of time and effort! It is also nice to get away from technology and find the next adventure!

Basecamp trip type you are most excited for: Backpacking in northern Wisconsin!

Something unique or weird about you: My favorite podcast is Stuff You Should Know.

Clubs or campus activities you are involved in: I'm on the executive board for the Wisconsin Track Club (go Cows!). I'm also a part of the Biomedical Engineering Society and Ski and Snowboard club.

Favorite thing about the outdoors: Sunrises and chunky chugs after backcountry dinners

Basecamp trip type you are most excited about: Canoeing The Wisconsin River

Something unique or weird about you: I love the Harry Potter movies

Clubs or Campus activities you are involved in: Hoofers Outing Club, Intramural Soccer Team

Regan Murray, Senior

Regan Murray, Senior

Major: Cartography and GIS

Why you are excited about being a leader: I love being outside and I love talking to people, so it's a double whammy! But real talk, I think UW-Madison is the best school ever and I can't wait to get some people hyped up about being on campus in the fall.

One thing you want incoming students to know about UW Madison: JOIN HOOFERS!

Favorite thing about the outdoors: I love feeling isolated and separate from city life. It is the most refreshing feeling in the world!

Basecamp Trip type you are most excited for:  I'm super excited for canoeing and hope I get to lead a trip on the water!

Something unique or weird about you: I have an extra bone in my foot and I didn't know until I broke my foot and got an x-ray when I was 12.

Clubs or Campus Activities you are involved in: I am in Hoofer Mountaineering and pretty much spend most of my time with those goons. But beyond that, I also work at the DoIT Help Desk and coach the youth climbing team at Summit!
