 2016 - 17 Wheelhouse Residency

The Wheelhouse Studios Artist in Residence for 2016 - 17 is Daniel L. Kaplan.

Life as We know it.

Daniel Kaplan uses various media to create installations exploring the nature of the invisible and the sacred as it manifests in everyday social hierarchy. Kaplan’s work aims to investigate the power of social exchange in facilitating sacred meaning by decentralizing sacred rituals from cultural objects and refocus them on relationships between people. Kaplan highlights the invisible capacity to create sacred meaning between people, as a means of exploring the nature of invisible, hidden, or latent parts of identity. Kaplan reclaims these invisible parts of identity as holy, asserting that these invisible parts are not ghosts, they are angels.

"I want to explore my personal invented process of prayer and meditation as a means of art-making. I do not aim to recreate the worship practice of Judaism, but rather use art as a method of bridging knowledge gaps where tradition is lost or inaccessible."

2015 - 16 The DROPS Project
Discrimination l Racism l Oppression l Prejudice l Stereotyping
Wheelhouse Studios Artist in Residence Tiffany Ike created the DROPS project to engage students and the campus community in a dialogue around race relations and the power of words. There were four primary elements of the project:

The Thought (DROP) Box
The "thought box" served as an opportunity for individuals to speak their mind without fear of backlash.  All information gathered from this portion of the project was used as inspiration for a final performance piece and a zine publication.

DROPS Performance
The finale of the project was two performances in Memorial Union's Play Circle theater. The performances included spoken word, dance and video inspired by happenings throughout the project.

Zine
The entire project and process was captured in a zine created by Tiffany. You can link to a PDF version of the DROPS Zine in the left hand column...
