Vijay Iyer completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics at Yale University and received his PhD in Technology and the Arts-Music Cognition, studying the relationship of music and society, all while pursuing his musical interests by recording, composing and touring. Iyer began formal training of the violin at the age of three and mostly taught himself the piano, the instrument he eventually chose. He has won numerous awards such as a 2013 ECHO Award for Best International Jazz Pianist, the 2012 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Album in 2010. Iyer is currently a professor at Harvard University's Department of Music.
