In Berlin, during the Romantic Era, young poet Heinrich wishes to kill himself but with a woman that loves him. Heinrich meets and makes a connection with Henriette, the wife of a business acquaintance, who is living a nice if boring life. Heinrich's offer to Henriette, to join him in a suicide pact, at first holds little appeal, but an unexpected change may push her towards Heinrich's plan.
