The Lighthouse (2019)

USA | 109 minutes | R | DCP | Dir. Robert Eggers

As the wavering cry of the foghorn fills the air, the taciturn former lumberjack, Ephraim Winslow, and the grizzled lighthouse keeper, Thomas Wake, set foot in a secluded and perpetually grey islet off the coast of late 19th century New England. For the following four weeks of back-breaking work and unfavorable conditions, the tight-lipped men will have no one else for company except for each other, forced to endure irritating idiosyncrasies, bottled-up resentment, and burgeoning.

"'The Lighthouse' can be enjoyed on dual levels - as a thickly atmospheric exercise in psychological terror, or as a compendium of seafaring legends, jokes, and clichés," - Nathaniel Bell, L.A. Weekly

"'The Lighthouse' is such an effective exercise in projecting claustrophobia, in both a physical and psychological sense, that it'd be unbearable to watch if it weren't so funny," - Alison Wilmore, New York Magazine
