USA | 64 min | DCP | Dir. Kevin Jerome Everson
Kevin Jerome Everson's work often toes the imaginary lines between avant-garde and conventional, as well as documentary and staged narrative. THE ISLAND OF ST. MATTHEWS utilizes Everson's unique style to profile the town of Westport, Mississippi and its residents who have become accustomed to the devastating flooding that frequents their area of the state. What results is a lived-in document of a community for whom marginalization and hardship have become the norm, and how identity is shaped and reborn from its own loss.
