The Garden of Earthly Delights Trilogy

Film
Thursday, March 10
7 pm
Cost: Free
Russell's three films look to how we define utopia and search for it in earthly places, while keeping eyes on the past, present, future, and imagined.

USA | 71 min | NR | Digital Projection | Dir. Ben Russell

Ben Russell's fame in American avant-garde has been steadily increasing over the last decade, and hit an apex in 2015 with his film YOLO which was lauded upon its release at the Wavelengths section of the Toronto International Film Festival. Also released in 2015 was the third film in Russell's "The Garden of Earthly Delights" trilogy, entitled Greetings to the Ancestors, which was a more meditative and opaque film. The trilogy's name takes its title from Hieronymous Bosch's famous triptych painting depicting heaven and hell, and the films serve a similar function in how they contemplate ideas and possibilities of utopia through ethnographic portraits of Swaziland, Malta, and indigenous groups in France and South Africa.

The three films playing are: LET US PERSEVERE IN WHAT WE HAVE RESOLVED BEFORE WE FORGET (2013) ATLANTIS (2014) GREETINGS TO THE ANCESTORS (2015)
