This is the story of a small group of modern seafaring gypsies, following them as they strike out across the largest expanse of uninhabited geography on earth, in search of adventure, awe and whatever else lies at the far side of the world.
The vessel is Infinity, a 120ft hand built sailing ketch that plies the Pacific Ocean, on a never ending voyage of nomadic exploration. In early Feb 2014, during the iciest year on record in the southern ocean, Infinity leaves Auckland, New Zealand on an 8,000 mile pacific crossing to Patagonia, with a possible stop in Antarctica. Along the way, the crew will battle a hurricane of ice in the Ross Sea, struggle with compounding mechanical and flooding problems, assist the radical environmental group sea shepherd and tear every sail they have. This story is about the quest to be truly awed by nature and the raw power of the physical world. This expedition is undertaken with a non-ice-reinforced gypsy boat built by hand in the 1970's and is crewed by a band of wandering miscreants, with no permits or insurance and an almost non-existent budget.
Awe has the power to diminish the emphasis on the individual self, encouraging people to forgo strict self-interest, to work towards improving the world around them. As society becomes more urban and young people grow up increasingly plugged into digital landscapes, where is this new generation going to get that essential awe of nature? This project seeks to motivate regular people to go experience the natural world for themselves, outside of the groomed, environmentally corrupt experiences of mass tourism, so they will see and care about what happens in these far flung places.
