Chinese Spring Festival Gala 2017

Other
Saturday, January 28
7 pm
Wisconsin Union Theater | Shannon Hall
Cost: Free
The Gala is held as a celebration of the arrival of the first day in Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival.

Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China and some other Southeast countries with significant Chinese culture background. The spring festival has been celebrated for thousands of years to honor deities and ancestor and to welcome a new coming of Chinese Lunar New Year. People pause their work and join their family members and relatives for a-week- long reunion. CSSA, as a RSO with the largest Chinese population, organized and hosted New Year Celebration on UW campus for the past two decades. Similar to the past timeline, in year 2017 we plan to hold the event on the closest weekend to the actual Lunar New Year celebration, i.e. January 28th would be a best fit. The event itself features various kinds of stage performances; we do not only expect show consists of only traditional Chinese performances, which includes but not limited to folk dances, traditional instruments such as Chinese zither and stand-up comedy. Performances from other part of the world, Indian Folk music group, African dance and a cappella, again not limited, were also scheduled as part of the event to fit in line with our mission to promote cultural awareness and diversity. The Spring Gala is open to all student population.
