UW Madison’s Black Music Ensemble is a student music group directed by world-renowned jazz bassist Richard Davis.

The Black Music Ensemble is a small collection of vocalists and instrumentalists devoted to studying the music of black composers and musicians. Following the 2016 retirement of Professor Richard Davis, this ensemble now continues as a student-run organization devoted to the continuation of the black musical tradition. The group performs the music of black artists from many time periods and styles, ranging from swing to funk and bebop to hip hop.
