The 2018 Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Billy Childs is one of the most diversely prolific and acclaimed artists working in music today.
Childs credits Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea as some of his early jazz influences and he also credits classical composers such as Paul Hindemith, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky for sparking his love of composition. The result of such a broad range of influences is Childs’ own “neoclassical” style that crosses musical boundaries.
Due to Childs’ varied interests, he has collaborated with other acclaimed artists including Yo-Yo Ma, The Kronos Quartet, Wynton Marsalis, Sting and Chris Botti.
“As a pianist, he possesses the improvisatory skills and powerful sense of swing one associates with world-class artists… Childs is an inventive composer and arranger whose effort in those areas consistently expand the dimensions of the jazz genre - and beyond.” - The Los Angeles Times
Before the quartet performs, Childs will join the UW Jazz Orchestra on stage for an exciting opening act.
