Wisconsin Sailing Team Head Coach and Sailing Program Manager Dave Elsmo has been invited to participate in the America’s Cup Endeavour Program in October. Elsmo is one of three intercollegiate sailing coaches in the United States chosen to participate in this year’s program.
Endeavour is a cross-curricular educational initiative that gives collegiate sailors and sailing professionals the opportunity to practice sailing while learning about the mechanics and engineering of sailboats. This includes a three-day program in Bermuda where he will meet Oracle Team USA sailors, boat builders and designers and have an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the team’s base. He will also work with the team to share coaching methods and discuss new technology in the industry.
Shortly after his return from Bermuda, Elsmo will travel to Nevada along with the top 10 collegiate sailors and sailing professionals in the U.S. to work in North Sails’ state-of-the-art 3D sail manufacturing facility. There, he will learn more about the company’s production process and the innovative technology behind 3D sail-making.
“We may try to implement these practices on our campus down the road, which would build a bridge between Outdoor UW, Hoofers and academic disciplines in STEM subjects,” Elsmo said.
Elsmo will increase the impact of this initiative by sharing his expertise with young sailors, fellow coaches and other sailing industry professionals.
