Outdoor learning events series returns for second year with new programming

Making its return for a second year, the Outdoor Explorer Series by Outdoor UW has begun again providing low-cost educational events throughout the year, including a brand new introductory course on car camping.

The Outdoor Explorer Series includes instructor-guided learning experiences for every level of outdoor adventurer. The Outdoor UW team created the Outdoor Explorer Series to help people find ways to enjoy the outdoors wherever they are in their outdoors skills and experiences. Patrons can register online or by calling (608) 262-1630.

With the series, the team aims to reduce barriers to enjoying the outdoors not only by creating experiences for all skill levels but also by providing cost-effective skills development classes with all equipment included.

The Series offers three categories of programs including introductory courses, leadership courses for those serving in outdoor recreation leadership roles, and advancement courses for skilled outdoor recreationists. The Outdoor Explorer Series schedule currently goes through April 2023.

“We want everyone to have the opportunity to explore the outdoors and to know that there are endless ways for them to enjoy and benefit from outdoor recreation,” Outdoor UW Program Manager Dan Dunne said.

The Outdoor UW team helps people explore the outdoors year round in many ways, including camping, hiking, and climbing equipment and snowshoes rentals, private outdoor group experiences, as well as kayak, canoe, and sailboat storage space rentals.

Everyone 18 and older can also join six outdoors clubs that make up the Wisconsin Hoofers, which is headquartered at Outdoor UW at Memorial Union. The clubs include the Hoofer Mountaineering Club, the Hoofer Outing Club, the Hoofer Riding Club, the Hoofer Sailing Club, the Hoofer Scuba Club, and the Hoofer Ski and Snowboard Club. No UW–Madison affiliation is needed to join a Wisconsin Hoofers club.

Wisconsin Hoofers clubs create outdoor experiences in which people of all abilities can learn outdoor skills and enjoy outdoor activities. Hoofers members take numerous excursions throughout the year in Wisconsin and, in some cases, throughout the United States, honing their skills and making the most of every season’s outdoor recreation opportunities.
