Jazz Legend Branford Marsalis’ Belonging Tour coming to Madison on May 1
Posted: 04/25/25

Legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his acclaimed ensemble, which together make up the Branford Marsalis Quartet, will perform in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Shannon Hall at Memorial Union as part of the Quartet’s Belonging Tour and will close out the Wisconsin Union Theater’s (WUT’s) 2024-2025 Jazz Series.
The Branford Marsalis Quartet, known for its dynamic interplay and expressive artistry, will perform original compositions, new takes on jazz standards, and songs from its brand-new Blue Note Records album, “Belonging.” “Belonging” is a full album interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s 1974 ECM album of the same name, which introduced the pianist’s European Quartet.
Three-time Grammy winner Marsalis has spent decades shaping jazz. His career has included performing with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, leading The Tonight Show Band, and collaborating with music legends, such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Sting.
Founded in 1986, the Branford Marsalis Quartet is one of the most enduring ensembles today. The current lineup includes pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.
“Branford calls this quartet ‘a chamber group rather than a jazz group,’ pointing to its focus on interpretations of historic masterpieces rather than the common contemporary expectation that jazz musicians are improvising and creating something completely new in the moment,” WUT Director Elizabeth Snodgrass said. “I also like to think it speaks to his lesser recognized but equally talented identity as a classical musician. This is also true of Keith Jarrett, making it a fitting choice for Branford’s new Blue Note album and tour.”
Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Memorial Union Box Office, or by phone at (608) 265-2787.
The performance will be preceded by a free studio class that is open for students to attend on May 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the Play Circle Theater at Memorial Union. The free studio class offers an opportunity for students to experience the Branford Marsalis Quartet in an intimate performance setting as the Quartet mentors student artists.
