The Student Performance Committee strives to enhance student involvement in the performing arts at UW as onstage and backstage participants, and as audience members. Student Performance presents in-house performances that all students can participate in. The committee also provides opportunities for new and existing student arts organizations to perform and promote themselves to the campus community.
Music:
Open Mic enables musicians of all styles and genres to show off their talents in front of a live audience. You can catch Open Mic on Thursdays during the school year and Wednesdays during the summer. Jazz Jam is the melting pot of the campus jazz scene, where student musicians can bring their instrument or voice and perform with each other and the house band. Jazz Jam is held the last Thursday of every month in the Rathskeller.
Theater:
Student Performance sponsors several shows in the Fredrich March Play Circle during the year but our biggest by far is the Marcia Legere Play Festival. This event features the winning one-act plays of the annual student playwriting competition, all produced, directed, and acted by UW students.
Comedy:
Weekly improv shows hosted by a local student troupe, The Understudies, happen in the play circle and are a great opportunity for some audience participation or just for a good laugh.
Spoken Word:
Just Bust! is an event co-sponsored by First Wave, a spoken word and urban arts community on campus, which showcases the work of poets on campus and features a celebrity guest that holds a themed workshop before each one.
Dance:
Different dance opportunities happen throughout the year including recitals and group dances, such as a Reggatone dance and the Optima Dance Spring Show. Our biggest dance event is a showcase which allows different groups on campus to perform together during one show.
