Background

The Wisconsin Union is the social, cultural and recreational center for the University of Wisconsin - Madison, serving students, Wisconsin Union members and faculty/staff. Under the direction of a student program board, Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD), and the Program Staff, the Union offers programs, including musical entertainment, art exhibits, films, lectures, dances, theatrical performances and more. Mini Courses is one of these Union programs. WUD sponsors Mini Courses and provides budget and policy oversight.

Mini Courses is an on-going series of short, informal, non-credit courses that began in 1972. It is similar to adult or continuing education programs in many communities. Ideas for courses come from program participants, instructors, and staff. The majority of enrollment comes from Union Members (53%), but students (40%) and faculty/staff (7%) also participate. Courses are scheduled within the University calendar, with two terms offered each spring and fall, and a single term each summer. The programs enrolls approximately 8,000 annually. The program is self-supporting. Course fees pay for all instructional and administrative costs.

Values of the Program

The program provides regularly scheduled courses focusing on self-improvement, developing and enhancing skills, while fostering lifelong learning. In addition the courses offer a leisure education opportunity that enhances social interaction between students, faculty, staff and Union members. The program presents a wide variety of courses responsive to and reflective of our diverse and multicultural campus community. For Instructors Mini Courses offers a means of sharing talents, testing one's abilities as a teacher, and opportunities for refining and expanding one's knowledge and understanding.

Mini Course Staff Responsibility

A professional staff takes responsibility for overall program direction, coordination and administration. Staff help develop course ideas, recruit, select and orient, and evaluate Instructors. They promote the program, conduct registration and program evaluation. Time is spent with Instructors in scheduling courses and facilities. Staff can serve as consultants in course design and planning, but this responsibility is primarily left to instructors.

The office in Memorial Union is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Mini Course Instructors

Instructors are appointed as Ad Hoc Academic Staff, each term, and are considered University employees. As employees Instructors are required to provide proof of work eligibility, tax identification/Social Security number, and are expected to adhere to a list of shared expectations, as outlined in the Instructor's Manual. Mini Course Instructors are furnished liability protection through the Risk Management Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
